I've always loved Winslow Homer!
I've always loves this painting, because it is not immediately apparent that the three boys in the foreground are looking, not at the ships at sea, but rather at three nude men jumping into the water from the rocks at the left. Also, this shows Homer's skillful use of fast-drying watercolor and "gouache," water color made opaque by the addition of a binder like powdered gum. A minor note: in these pre-sunscreen, pre-sunglasses years, the boys are wearing broad-brimmed straw hats, and long sleeved shirts to protect themselves from sunburns.
