"In Norse mythology, Valkyries were originally sinister spirits that would fly above the battlefield in search of the dead, deciding the fate of the fallen for Odin. The word “Valkyrie” means “chooser of the slain,” and once chosen the warriors would be flown by the Valkyries over Bifrost, the rainbow bridge, and on to Valhalla. Valhalla was the heavenly home of Odin’s fallen army, and hall of those who had died heroically in battle." (Source)
The most famous Valkyrie was Brunhild, who was the lover of the hero, Siegfried. The two were important characters in Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, from which comes today's music selection.
When I was 15 years old, I got a hundred dollars for my birthday. My band director took me to Memphis - to Pop Tunes on Popular Avenue - so I could buy Wagner's Ring Cycle conducted by Sir Georg Solti. It cost a hundred dollars. The set comprised of four full operas (15 hours of music in one big box set - all telling the story of the Ring of the Nibelungen. I am most proud of the fact that over several days, I listened to the entire thing reading the English translation as they sang. I would bet money that I was the only 15 year old in my state or region that owned the box set of Wagner's Ring Cycle. : )
Some of you will remember this music from the movie, Apocalypse Now, (I love the smell of Napalm in the morning) while some of you may remember this as the famous Elmer Fudd song, Kill da Wabbit, from the Bugs Bunny cartoon. I suspect most of us remember it from both.
