You probably won't hear or read a Valentine's Day message

When I was a young adult, I used to feel like something was very wrong with me because I didn't have a lover to share Valentine's Day with. As it has turned out, I've been single all of my life. I've had a few girlfriends and a few more boyfriends over the years, but never that special long-term relationship lover I could call my own. You can imagine how I used to fret and hurt this time of year being bombarded by Valentine's Day ads from retailers. And making things worse, were the movies and TV shows all about lovers loving so lovingly while I sat at home all alone feeling left out of it all.

Now days.  Now, I understand that it wasn't because I was unlovable. It's because I am just not a couples type of guy. I'm really not - I'm not just whistling sour grapes here. I've tried it and I didn't care much for it. It's great if you are a couples guy and it's great if you aren't. It all depends on the individual. These days, I am happy and proud being a single me and loving me. (I have my own parade and everything, ya know. You might not notice though because it just looks like I'm walking down the street by myself. : ) JOKING! You know I love being SILLY!)

So what does a Single guy do for Valentine's Day? Well, I'll give myself flowers and candy and have an extra special day just for me from me. Tonight, after a scrumptious dinner, I will be listening to chill music, luxuriating in a long, hot bubble bath, drinking a little wine and then I'll whisk myself away to have an extra special time making love to myself. 

I know some folks will think this is "oh so sad", but for me it isn't. This IS what I love to do. I love being single. I love my company. I love not having to deal with all the issues that couples have to deal with. Some folks love it and that is terrific. Others, like me, don't love it and that is terrific, too. I learned a long time ago that I was not going to wait on others to make me happy.  While I love others and care for them deeply, my happiness does not depend on anyone else but me.

If you are single, I hope you won't let the retailers and media get you down. Get out there and celebrate the love you have for yourself. Treat yourself and savor the moments of loving yourself. For all us single guys:
