NAME THAT MOVIE GAME

Here is the answer to the last question:
A Christmas Story
is a 1983 American Christmas comedy film directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepherd's semi-fictional anecdotes in his 1966 book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, with some elements from his 1971 book Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters. It stars Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley and is a seasonal classic in North America. It is shown numerous times on television, usually on the networks owned by WarnerMedia, and a marathon of the film has aired annually on TNT or TBS since 1997 titled "24 Hours of A Christmas Story", consisting of 12 consecutive airings of the film from the evening of Christmas Eve to the evening of Christmas Day.[2] It is often ranked as one of the best Christmas films.

Here is today's question

I've gotta suggestion for viewing today's posts

There are three videos in today's Music section

They are not long, in fact one is very short

I suggest you watch - stay with the videos

Do not scroll down to view the photo sets

Just experience your thoughts and feelings as you listen to the lyrics

After you listen to the three videos in today's Music section

I suggest you do not listen to anything else

Just scroll through the photoset silently

Let the lingering spirit and feelings of the music

Stay with you in silence as you scroll through the photos

This is what I did this morning and I felt more connected to the photoset

anyway - try it - you might like it : )

AOM TV: How To Meditate for Beginners

Meditation is very simple
Have no expectations
Just
Sit
Set Timer
Close Your Eyes
Focus on your breathing through your nose
That's it

There are many different ways to Meditate
This is the way I usually use

Sit comfortably with your back straight
You can sit in the lotus position, cross legged,
sit in chair with your feet on the floor,
you can sit on your couch, or on your bed
You can even lie down- though this may lead to sleep
I actually do meditate in bed as I go to sleep

Once in your comfy position
Set a timer
This will help you to not think about time
Start out for five minutes
As you progress, increase your time to 10, 20, 30 minutes or more
It is better to Meditate every day for a short amount of time
Than to Meditate a long time a few days a week
Meditation needs to be done every day
In order to gain its benefits

Close your eyes
Pay attention to your breath
Breathing in and out through your nose
Your breath is your anchor
Observe your breath as you inhale and exhale
Notice the sensations of breathing
NOW
Thoughts will come and go
Do not push them away or grab on to them
Never fight or struggle - just let them all go
Just let them arise as they will
Watch them float away
Each time your attention moves to your thoughts or feelings
You may find yourself getting caught up in them
You will catch yourself thinking about all kinds of things
Getting caught up in all kinds of stories
That's okay
No Worries - That is Normal
Do no judge the thoughts or feelings
Do not judge yourself that you got caught up in your thoughts
Just notice you are thinking
The fact that you caught yourself lost in thoughts
Is AWESOME! You are Learning, and strengthening the observer
The more this happens the stronger you will become
The observer in you stopped and noticed
"Hey! I'm thinking - back to the breath"
Then gently move your attention back to your breath
The breath is your anchor
It gives your monkey mind something to do
Just pay attention to your normal, natural breathing
Don't try to affect your breathing
Just breath naturally
Just watch your breathing
That is pretty much it
Just be present in the Here and Now - calm and nonjudgmental
Stay uninvolved
Just be the watcher - the mindful witness
Just watch - Just Witness
You are not your thoughts or feelings or even your body
You are who is observing
You are the watcher

So to Review:
Sit
Set Timer
Close Your Eyes
Focus on your breathing

Note: You do not need to listen to anything
Some teachers suggest just sitting without sounds or music
I do not usually meditate to music
As I tend to get carried away in the music
I do sometimes meditate with nature sounds
Like a flowing river or waterfalls - white noise
I also like rainfall without thunder
I don't particularly like bird sounds in my nature soundscapes
They are distracting to me - others may like them
Best of the Best for me
I really enjoy meditating outdoors sitting in a chair
I like to sit shirtless with my bare feet on the grass
As I focus my attention on my breathing
I love noticing the sun and breeze on my skin
Listening to all the sounds in my neighborhood
Just being aware of the sensations and sounds

You can actually meditate anywhere and anytime
Like standing in line in the supermarket
Eyes open but still just focusing on the breath

"When we carefully observe our thoughts, we discover that they are not in our control—we swim in an uninvited constant stream of memories, plans, expectations, judgments, regrets. Often the root of these movements of mind is dissatisfaction. We seem to want both endless excitement and perfect peace. But instead of being served by our thinking, we are driven by it in unconscious and unexamined ways. While thoughts can be enormously useful and creative, often they dominate our experience with attachments to our likes and dislikes, with views that divide the world into higher and lower, self and other. Our thoughts repeatedly tell stories about our successes and failures, plan our security, habitually remind us of who and what we think we are. Through mindfulness, we can come to know and let go of the patterns of unhelpful worry and obsession; we can clarify our confusion and release destructive views and opinions. We can reflect on what we most value."

~Jack Kornfield

~*~

“We tend to be particularly unaware that we are thinking virtually all the time. The incessant stream of thoughts flowing through our minds leaves us very little respite for inner quiet. And we leave precious little room for ourselves anyway just to be, without having to run around doing things all the time. Our actions are all too frequently driven rather than undertaken in awareness, driven by those perfectly ordinary thoughts and impulses that run through the mind like a coursing river, if not a waterfall. We get caught up in the torrent and it winds up submerging our lives as it carries us to places we may not wish to go and may not even realize we are headed for.

“Meditation means learning how to get out of this current, sit by its bank and listen to it, learn from it, and then use its energies to guide us rather than to tyrannize us. This process doesn’t magically happen by itself. It takes energy. We call the effort to cultivate our ability to be in the present moment ‘practice‘or ‘meditation practice.’”

~Jon Kabat-Zinn
from his book,
Wherever You Go, There You Are.

~*~

"While washing the dishes one should only be washing the dishes, which means that while washing the dishes, one should be completely aware of the fact that one is washing the dishes.  At first glance, that might seem a little silly: why put so much stress on a simple thing?  But that’s precisely the point.  The fact that I am standing there and washing these bowls is a wondrous reality.  I’m being completely myself, following my breath, conscious of my presence, and conscious of my thoughts and actions.  There’s no way I can be tossed around mindlessly like a bottle slapped here and there on the waves.

While washing dishes, you might be thinking about the tea you’re going to drink afterwards, and so try to get them out of the way as quickly as possible in order to sit and drink tea.  But that means that you are incapable of living during the time you are washing the dishes.  When you are washing the dishes, washing the dishes must be the most important thing in your life.  Just as when you’re drinking tea, drinking tea must be the most important thing in your life.

In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can't wash the dishes, the chances are we won't be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus we are sucked away into the future -and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life.”

~Thich Nhat Hanh
(The Miracle of Mindfulness)

~*~

"Mindfulness simply means awareness. It's a direct, intuitive knowing of what you are doing while you are doing it. It's knowing what's going on inside your mind and body, and what's going on in the outside world as well.

Most of the time our attention is not where we intended it to be. Our attention is hijacked by our thoughts and emotions, by our concerns, by our worries for the future, and our regrets and memories of the past. Mindful awareness is about learning to pay attention, in the present moment, and without judgement. It's like training a muscle - training attention to be where you want it to be. This reduces our tendency to work on autopilot, allowing us to us choose how we respond and react."

Conscious Breathing

Be aware of your breathing
Breathing in
Breathing out
Focus attention on the rims of your nostrils
As the air flows through them
Like a swinging door
Breathing in and breathing out
Focus only on the breath

Thoughts and feelings like fish
will swim through your mind
Let them swim on through
Don't judge them
Don't grasp them
Don't push them away
Just let them swim through
Remain focused on your breathing
If you get distracted by thoughts and feelings
And you will
No big deal
Just calmly return your attention back to your breathing

~*~

“When feeling lonely or anxious, most of us have the habit of looking for distractions, which often leads to some form of unwholesome consumption -- whether eating a snack in the absence of hunger, mindlessly surfing the Internet, going on a drive, or reading. Conscious breathing is a good way to nourish body and mind with mindfulness.”

~Thich Nhat Hanh
(Silence: The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise)

~*~

"Observe your own body. It breathes. You breathe when you are asleep, when you are no longer conscious of your own ideas of self-identity. Who, then, is breathing? The collection of information that you mistakenly think it’s you is not the main protagonist in this drama called the breath. In fact, you are not breathing; breath is naturally happening to you. You can purposely end your own life, but you cannot purposely keep your own life going. The expression, “My life” is actually an oxymoron, a result of ignorance and mistaken assumption. You don’t posses life; life expresses itself through you. Your body is a flower that life let bloom, a phenomenon created by life.”

AOM Meditation: 042020

~*~

Hatchet is a novel by Gary Paulsen. It is a survival story of a teen-aged boy named Brian. The story begins with Brian and a pilot flying over the vast Canadian wilderness in a single engine bush plane. During the flight, the pilot suffers a heart attack, loses control of the plane, and crashes into a lake.

Brian escapes the submerged plane and swims to the shore. That first night, as he tries to sleep, he is viciously attacked by thousands upon thousands of mosquitoes. He fights, wrestles and writhes insane trying to stop the unstoppable mosquito attack. Finally, he surrenders and just takes it.

Alone, battered and bruised, he just lies there in the dark and takes the attack. Accepting what he could not change did not stop his suffering but he suffered less once he accepted what was.  Later in the story, Brian discovered how to make fire and finds other strategies to combat the mosquitoes. While the mosquitoes were awful to endure, he was able to endure them without the torture because he changed his attitude. He quit fighting and accepted what he could not change. It was only then that he could move on to learn how to make life better for himself.

I've remembered that scene from the book because it is a great example of accepting what is - accepting the things we cannot change. It seems to me we are all in a similar situation today. We are all enduring a period of self-isolation due to the virus. We can't go and do as we once did. We can fight, wrestle, and writhe against our current situation or we can accept what is and find ways to make our current situation more pleasant. It's all a matter of changing our attitudes. Let us see our current situation with new eyes. Rather than focusing on what we can't do, let's focus on what we can. Let's choose to make this time amazing and fun. We have this time to grow in so many different ways. It's all about our perspective - how we see what is. We can make these hard times better. Our Perspective and Attitude are Key.

The Importance of Meditation in Crazy Times
by Leo Babauta

"These are times of heightened change, disruption, uncertainty, fear, anxiety. It can feel pretty crazy for most of us.

So how do we cope? What can we do in the middle of chaos and crisis?

This is when meditation becomes of critical importance.

Without meditation, we have no way of dealing with the anxieties coming up.

All of our old ways of coping (which don’t normally work very well) are not working at all:

Distraction and ignoring (how can you ignore something that’s everywhere?)

Procrastination and avoiding (you can’t avoid this crisis)

Control of all kinds (you can’t control this, though we’re all trying to find ways to control)

Exiting, quitting (you can’t exit from the world)

Complaining, lashing out at others (you can do this, but it only makes the situation worse)

Worrying (yep, that’s happening a lot)

So if our usual ways of coping with worry and uncertainty cannot work right now … what can we do?

We can freak out. Or we can meditate. It’s our choice.

What Meditation Can Do Right Now

Meditation isn’t magic, but it is a medicine for uncertainty and anxiety.

Here’s what it can do for us in these times of heightened fears:

Help us to notice when we’re caught up in anxious thoughts — when you notice this, you can do something about it

Help us to see the feelings that are arising for us, which we might not normally notice

Interrupt the thought cycles we get caught up in, that might be keeping us from being present or sleeping, by dropping our awareness into the sensations of the body

Help calm down and see that in this moment, things are not dangerous, they are actually OK

Bring calm focus when we need to get some stuff done

These are just a few things you might see from meditation. Obviously, there’s much more to it. But it’s worth practicing.

How to Form the Meditation Habit

If you don’t already have a meditation habit, don’t worry … it’s absolutely doable. If you’ve done it before but let it drop, don’t worry … just let go of any guilt and start again.

Here’s what I recommend:

Pick a time. Let’s say 7am each day. Actually, it’s best to pick something you already do every single day, and tie the habit to that event — right when you wake up, for example, or right after you shower.

Set a reminder. Put the reminder on your phone and calendar every day, so you don’t forget. Also put a paper note somewhere you’ll see it. Forgetting to do the habit is very common in the beginning.

Set a timer for 2 minutes. When you’re ready to meditate, pick a comfortable spot (a chair or couch is fine), and set a timer for just 2 minutes to start with. Yes, that’s very short, but it’s a great way to start out a new habit — start very small, so it’s easier to stick to. You can increase it by a couple minutes every 7 days, if you do well at sticking to it.

Just pay attention to your breath. It’s a simple thing to put your attention on — turn your mind’s attention to the breath, and leave it there for the 2 minutes. When (not if) your mind wanders from the breath to thoughts … simply notice, and bring the mind back to the breath. Don’t worry about getting distracted, it happens to everyone. Just keep coming back to the breath.

When the timer goes off, thank yourself. A little gratitude helps to stick to any habit. Thank yourself for making the effort, and notice what good this small practice has brought you.

It’s pretty simple,
but you have to notice the benefits
or you’ll put off the habit."
