The Unmade Bed by Imogen Cunningham

Imogen Cunningham (April 12, 1883 – June 23, 1976) was an American photographer known for her botanical photography, nudes, and industrial landscapes.

We see the unmade bed. We see hair pins left upon the mattress. Who was in that bed - was it lovers? I love the rolls and folds of the sheets and quilts - they are like the waves of the sea pulled away from the shore.

Photo of the Day: Mawhrin Skel Photography

Diver by Mawhrin Skel Photography

From what I read, this is a photo of a corporate sculpture of which the photographer didn't like. Though he was not crazy about the sculpture, he did a great job capturing a very dramatic scene with it. I really love his perspective.

Photo of the Day: Mervyn O'Gorman Photography

Christina (1913) by Mervyn O'Gorman

This photo is over 100 years old. Amazing, isn't it? It looks as though it could have been taken yesterday. In the early years of photography, there were processes like autochrome that made color photography possible. Because the process was mechanical, many photographers chose the monochrome processes as it gave them greater artistic control over the process. Follow the link to the website to see more and you will see just how beautiful his work is.

Photo of the Day: Arkadiusz Makowski Photography

 Infinity by Arkadiusz Makowski

I love how dramatic Makowski's work is. The ominous lighting and the straining subject draw me in emotionally. I get the feeling I'm seeing a story similar to that of Sisyphus.

~*~

Sisyphus: In Greek mythology Sisyphus or Sisyphos was the king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He is being punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it come back to hit him, repeating this action for eternity. Through the classical influence on modern culture, tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean.

Here's a gorgeous artwork by JPCain
from the JPCain deviantArt gallery depicting Sisyphus. (link)

I'm not sure this is what Arkakiusz had in mind,
but it is the feeling I get when I view his photo.

You should visit Arkakiusz Makowski's website

His artistry is AMAZING!

Landscape study by Charles Leander Weed

Charles Leander Weed was an American photographer, who was born in New York state in 1824, and died in 1903. He is perhaps best known for being one of the earliest photographers, if not the first photographer, to enter and photograph what is now Yosemite National Park. (Wikipedia)

Photo of the Day: Johnny Picardo Photography

“Voyage: Search for Manhood” by Johnny Picardo

"Photographer Johnny Picardo’s images are studies in transition. Picardo positions suspended bodies and incomplete gestures as metaphor for self discovery. The central figure of “Voyage” renders as a human chrysalis, slipping from his manufactured shell to emerge anew." (Source)

~*~

To me, a devout Naturist, I see this in a very similar way. I see the man - me - having broken free from the social constraints of my "manufactured textile prison", the separation from the natural world, and the identity clothing confers upon me - to become the free, natural, true human being I was born to be - We were all born to be. This is a spiritual journey we witness in Picardo's "Voyage".

Photo of the Day: Duane Michals Photography

by Duane Michals
from his photo book, The Adventures of Constantine Cavafy

The inscription at the bottom reads:

"He touched the words he had written to his face
and felt their grace as in prayer."

Duane Michals returns to the poetry of twentieth-century Greek poet Constantine Cavafy for inspiration for his most recent work. Michals images loosely illustrate Cavafys poetry, while investigating themes of lost time, love discovered and remembered, and the sublime realm of the surreal. 'Please meet me in the circle of this conceit. These little fables of my imaginary theatrics repeat the mantras of Cavafy s desires and regrets: so old today, now gone away.' -Duane Michals (Amazon)

Michals is famous for his use of photo sequencing - telling a story through a sequence of photos. Here is an example:

Narcissus

I highly recommend searching the Internet for more information and more photos by Duane Michals. He is an incredibly interesting, innovative, creative and fun photographer.
