"If we are interested in a life of discovery and if we are interested in meditation as an expression of that life, then the experience of someone else, no matter how fantastic, is useful only as a cross-reference to our own experience. As co-explorers of the universe we compare notes, check out specimens and samples that we have collected, and examine the maps and journals that we have assembled. But looking at the map is not the same as going down the river. Examining a specimen is not the same as observing the life form in its habitat. Hearing, and even believing, another explorer's adventure is not the same as having our own. We have our own adventure to undertake. So when we read or listen to any description of meditation, or spiritual experience, first let us understand that we have to find out what is true, through our own direct perception."

"What makes us miserable, what causes us to be in conflict with one another, is our insistence on our particular view of things: our view of what we deserve or want, our view of right and wrong, our view of self, our view of other, our view of life, our view of death. But views are just views. They are not ultimate truth."

“Don't spend your precious time asking "Why isn't the world a better place?" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better?" To that there is an answer.”
